Puffs to Death — Cigarettes
I am now age 68 and all my life I have seen the rise and fall of the cigarette business. In the 1940′s every adult seemed to smoke, both my mother and father puffed on cigarettes. We often went to church meetings and all the adults were just enveloped in smoke. Rooms were typically filled with smoke, and it was sort of something you got to do when you grow up.
Of course I smoked corn silk when I was a little kid, and burned my throat, so I quit lighting up right then.
I got secondary smoke when I did marriage counseling for quite a few years. People came to me under great stress, and always asked, “Do you mind if I smoke?” Well I always let them chain smoke in my little office. It was unpleasant, but they were paying me by the half hour. I’m sure that was bad on my lungs.
When I was in the Navy packs of cigarettes were put on my meal tray. I think the government at all levels is complicit in the addiction of people in our society. And they extract taxes for every pack sold.
I have a blog about cigarettes and it is called ‘Puffs to Death –Cigarettes. It can be found at:

Lucky Burn
Cigarettes
I tried them at ten
Expensive at ten
When I was ten
The cost was ten
Cents
For a few cigs
So
I found corn silk
Slick
News paper wrapped
I sucked that smoke
Down
Inhaled
In nineteen fifty
I hid and puffed
Cost me nothing
Big old wrap in
Newsprint
Fat puff
Worked fine
Till
I pulled it hard
And flame
Burned
Down
Way down my
Throat
Oh
Ouch
Yikes
Wow
The hurt
But I
Never never
Lit one again
Not speaking
Right
For two weeks
Fire makes
Bad habits
Burn out.
